Abstract
If the exceptional observables introduced by Jordan von Neumann and Wigner are identified with charge states corresponding to internal degrees of freedom of elementary particles then one is led to the classification of quarks and leptons by means of exceptional groups It is shown that the groups of the E series are likely candidates and a gauge field theory based on E7 is given as an example The hierarchy of symmetry breaking is linked to the hierarchy of stability groups for geometries that are associated with the exceptional groups
