Abstract
Two processes that are of major importance in the global carbon cycle photosynthesis and calcification are widely associated in the marine environment This association can be direct as in coccolithophores and calcareous algae or in the form of symbiosis as found in hermatypic corals planktonic and benthonic foraminifera These groups of organisms are the major calcifiers in the ocean and precipitate the bulk of CaCO3 in the pelagic and the neritic environments
