Abstract
The many subdisciplines of biology frequently overlap but each is usually characterized by its special approach to the problems of living systems The unique point of view of physiology is the emphasis on biological function and the goal of physiologists is to explain processes eg transport across membranes and excitation in terms of the laws of physics and chemistry The information that is obtained by the other disciplines about morphology or chemical composition are important components of an explanation but in the end the physiologist will use this information to shed light on a process involved in function
