Abstract
The fluoroelastomers are highly specialized products that as a class show the best resistance of all rubbers to the attack of heat chemicals and solvents This chapter covers the technology of the fluorocarbon elastomers based on carbon chains containing fluorine usually hydrogen and occasionally other substituents Fluorosilicones the other major fluoroelastomer are described in Chapter 13 on silicones Over the 12 years since the last edition understanding and application of these products has increased substantially as the result of the development of new types possessing better processibility and greatly improved compression set and steam resistance There are now five manufacturers Table 141 By 1983 worldwide usage excluding the USSR surpassed 7 million pounds worth over 80000000 but their valueinuse in terms of critical problems solved is far greater
