Abstract
The development of Bacillus sphaericus as a microbial control agent of mosquitoes has been somewhat hampered by the success and broader spectrum of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis B t i Despite its narrower host range B sphaericus offers some distinct advantages over its commercially produced counterpart Most notable is the increased duration of larvicidal activity against certain species of mosquitoes especially in organically enriched habitats Several studies attest to prolonged control of mosquito larvae under natural and simulated natural conditions Hornby Hertlein and Miller 1984 Des Rochers and Garcia 1984 Lacey Urbina and Heitzman 1984 Mulla et al 1984a Silapanuntakul et al 1983 Vankova 1984 Mulligan Schaefer and Wilder 1980 Under certain conditions the bacterium may actually recycle within mosquito cadavers Charles and Nicolas 1986 Karch and Coz 1986 Nicolas DossouYovo and Hougard 1987
