In 1994, Potter reported that plasmacytomas were inducible in susceptible BALB/C mice by the intraperitoneal injection of silicone gel [1]. These findings raised the possibility that long-term exposure to silicone gel in humans could result in plasma cell proliferation resulting in either monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance (MGUS) or multiple myeloma (MM). We report three cases of MM in women with silicone gel breast implants (SGBIs) and preliminary data on the prevalence of increased immunoglobulins and MGUS in symptomatic women with breast implants.
