Abstract
Easy magnetization reversal associated with a small area of the hysteresis loop and a low coercivity Hc are the characterizing features of soft magnetic materials Quite analogous to hard magnetic materials intrinsic magnetic properties and microstructure are to be optimized to obtain soft magnetic materials However low to zero magnetocrystalline anisotropy and weak to zero interaction between magnetic domain walls and lattice defects or grain boundaries are required just the opposite of the conditions favourable for permanent magnets Moreover the frequency of alternating currents and of alternating induced magnetic fields plays an important role for the usefulness of soft magnetic materials because these are the conditions under which they are mainly used and magnetic flux reversal leads to losses which are to be minimized
