Abstract

The communication networks and services are changing rapidly The conventional circuit and packet switched networks are being replaced by next generation networks primarily based on Internet Protocol The rapid growth of web based services has lead to the explosive growth of the internet However the current internet protocol IPv4 which is the backbone of transmission control protocol TCP/IP networking is rapidly becoming obsolete with the inherent problems related with limited address space security and QoS features The new protocol IPv6 has been developed to overcome all these problems and to provide solutions for the next generation networks This paper addresses the features of IPv6 Protocol the status of standardisation and various activities around the world
