Abstract
To obtain high crop yields different plant requirements such as demand for nitrogen have to be full filled Estimation of the nitrogen status in the plant may be done with leaf diagnostics based on the relationship between nitrogen content and chlorophyll content This study aimed to determine chlorophyll contents in individual plant parts and relationships between nitrogen and chlorophyll content of winter wheat varieties Field trials were carried out at the experimental field trial station of the Latvia University of Agriculture during 1998–1999 Four winter wheat varieties were tested early varieties ‘Donskaja polukarlikovaja’ and ‘Sirvintas1’ and medium to late varieties ‘Otto’ and ‘Bussard’ Chlorophyll concentration in the whole plant depends on the fertilizer rate Chlorophyll concentration reaches a maximum during the flowering stage A good correlation exists between leaf chlorophyll content and nitrogen content at beginning of stem elongation Zadoks Growth Stage 32
