Approximately 30 of the world’s terrestrial surface is covered by drylands namely the arid semiarid and dry subhumid areas FAO 1997 The extent of the area and the fact that 900 million people live in these environments are the main reasons for the priority given by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations FAO to the sustainable development of drylands
