Abstract

The rates of incident and cleared carcinogenic human papillomavirus HPV were assessed by age in women aged 1549 years A total of 253 506 previously HPVnegative women and 54 446 previously HPVpositive women were retested The mean interval between visits was 140 months Incident HPV infection occurred in 111 of the women overall with the highest rate 250 in the 1519 year age group In univariate analysis risk factors for incident HPV were the median number of sexual partners in the past year and median number of sexual partners over a lifetime The results showed incident infection with carcinogenic HPV was highest in women aged 1519 years and risk factors were consistent with a sexually transmitted infection
