Abstract
Bog and modern oak wood extractives were studied to see the impact of bog conditions upon the nature of extractives using Fourier transform infrared analyses Except for the ethanoltoluene extracts of modern oak acidic components predominate in the bogwood ester forms prevail in modern or nonbog wood In both cases toluene extractives were mostly fatty acids and their esters whilst the extracts recovered by the remaining solvents were mainly polar aromatic substances of cyclic nature Tests revealed these components to be mainly tannins and low molecular polysaccharides
