Abstract

Overactive bladder OAB is a common and significant problem affecting 34 million patients with an estimated cost of 65 million in the United States alone 1 The mainstay of OAB treatment has been behavioral modification pelvic floor physical therapy and oral anticholinergic agents however many patients are unable to comply with or will not respond to these therapies Percutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation PTNS was first described for the treatment of OAB in 1987 Many pharmaceutical trials for OAB medications show a significant placebo effect 2 Assessing the placebo effect in neuromodulation can be difficult because of its procedural and often surgical nature In this study Peters and colleagues
