Research on stressful life-events has progressed during the past three decades with a focus on specific life-events, such as bereavement. The loss of an important person confronts the bereaved with four tasks of grieving: accepting the reality of the loss, experiencing the pain of grief, adjusting to the environment without the deceased emotionally, and moving on in one’s own life.Although grief is not a disease and most people adjust without professional psychological intervention, bereavement is associated with excess risk of mortality, with higher prevalence of physical and mental symptoms and illnesses, and with increased use of medical services (Stroebe et al. 2007). Intense, prolonged grief has been shown to constitute a clinically significant behavioral and psychological syndrome or pattern that is associated with present distress or disability, meeting the impairment-definition of a DSM-IV mental disorder.
