Abstract

Date palm being a crop of the arid and marginal lands has an integral relationship with the life of the rural people It has excellent potential for improving the rural sector and contributing to the economic social and cultural aspects of rural areas Various primary and secondary products of date palm add to the economic and social security of the people Date palm cultivation helps generate considerable opportunities for rural employment ensures livelihood and food security of the rural masses and facilitates ecorestoration It can act as a catalyst for the development of the rural sector in the arid regions Largescale scientific cultivation of date palm in traditional and nontraditional areas necessitates quality planting materials in sufficient quantity Tissueculture propagation ensures rapid multiplication and establishment of truetotype plants of elite cultivars It is an effective and efficient alternative for conventional vegetative propagation Research and development work to design viable protocols for the tissueculture propagation of leading commercial cultivars of date palm has been undertaken at various centers Several commercial agencies are involved in the largescale multiplication and distribution of date palm using in vitro techniques Tissueculture technology its potential and impact on rural development and the efforts for largescale cultivation of date palm using tissue culture plants in the arid regions of India are discussed
