Abstract

Trimezia campanula Iridaceae Iridoideae here described and illustrated is endemic to Caparaó Mountains Brazil The new species broadens the circumscription of Trimezia Its distinctive features include a goldenyellow campanulate perianth and filiform style branches with undivided apices that lack crests and have an apical stigmatic zone The flowers of T campanula most closely resemble those of Pseudotrimezia but species of that genus have yellow anthers and cylindrical leaves whereas T campanula has black anthers and flat leaves Although different from the other species of Trimezia the new species is here placed because of a combination of characters that includes cylindrical flowering stems flat leaves a spotted perianth and ellipsoid fruits Phylogenetic analyses also strongly support its inclusion in Trimezia where the new species emerges in a clade close to T martinicensis the type species of the genusTrimezia campanula Iridaceae aqui descrita e ilustrada é endêmica da Serra do Caparaó Brasil A nova espécie amplia a delimitação do gênero Trimezia Seus caracteres distintivos são o perianto campanulado com tépalas amareloouro e o ápice dos estiletes inteiro sem cristas e com zona estigmática apical As flores de T campanula assemelhamse mais às de Pseudotrimezia mas as espécies deste gênero possuem anteras amarelas e folhas cilíndricas enquanto T campanula possui anteras negras e folhas planas Embora diferente das restantes Trimezia a nova espécie é posicionada neste gênero devido à combinação de caracteres como ramos da inflorescência cilíndricos folhas planas perianto ornamentado e frutos elipsóides A inclusão de T campanula em Trimezia é também corroborada por análises filogenéticas que a situa no mesmo clado e próxima de T martinicensis a espécietipo do gêneroWe thank Marina Cattai for helping with anatomical studies Lúcio S Leoni and Rafaela C Forzza for providing loans and access to CFJP and RB collections Adolfo Espejo Serna and two anonymous reviewers for the helpful comments and suggestions on the manuscript This work was financed by Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo FAPESP and International Association for Plant Taxonomy IAPT Renato de MelloSilva is CNPq research fellow
