Abstract

Carbon dioxide CO2 emissions from passenger cars represent an important and growing contributor to climate change Increasing the proportion of electric vehicles EVs in passenger car fleets could help to reduce these emissions but their ability to do this depends on the fuel mix used in generating the electricity that energises EVs This chapter analyses the indirect welltowheels CO2 emissions from EVs when run in a range of countries and compares these to welltowheels emissions data for a selection of internal combustion engine vehicles ICEVs and hybrid electric vehicles HEVs Holdway Energy Environ Sci 3121825−1832The Nissan Leaf also formatted “LEAF” as a backronym for leading environmentally friendly affordable family car is a fivedoor midsize hatchback electric car manufactured by Nissan and introduced in Japan and the US in December 2010 The US Environmental Protection Agency determined the range to be 117 kilometres 73 mi with an energy consumption of 765 kJ/km 34 kWh per 100 miles and rated the Leaf’s combined fuel economy at 99 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent The Leaf has a range of 175 km 109 mi on the New European driving cycleThe Thnk City is a small twoseater or 2 + 2seater highwaycapable electric car produced by Think Global and production partner Valmet Automotive with a top speed of 110 kilometres per hour 68 mph and an allelectric range of 160 kilometres 99 mi on a full chargeThe Mitsubishi i MiEV MiEV is an acronym for Mitsubishi innovative electric vehicle is a fivedoor hatchback electric car produced by Mitsubishi Motors According to the manufacturer the i MiEV allelectric range is 100 miles 160 km on the Japanese test cycle and 75 miles 121 km on the US cycle The i MiEV was launched for fleet customers in Japan in July 2009 and on April 1 2010 for the wider public
