Abstract
Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disease of unknown etiology that affects the worldwide population While it occurs in all age groups adults aged 30 to 49 years are most commonly affected1 Approximately 10 to 40 adults per 100 000 are affected by sarcoidosis in the United States and Europe2 It is much more rare in children The yearly incidence increases from 006 per 100 000 children younger than 4 years to 102 per 100 000 children aged 14 to 15 years and continues to increase into early to middle adulthood3 Although it is twice as prevalent in women as in men this prevalence is not found in children a Danish study revealed a male to female ratio of 10934 Adult US patients of African American and Puerto Rican descent are more likely to develop sarcoidosis25 Among children the prevalence of sarcoidosis is greater in African Americans than in whites2
