Abstract

The great variation between the incidences in penile cancer across countries seems to be due to environmental factors Human papilloma virus HPV accounts for about half of penile cancers with proposed intracellular biological pathways Unlike the more common cancers the genomic changes of penile cancer have yet to be reported The interaction of environmental carcinogens and the genome is likely to be fascinating and provide new targets for treatment in the years to come High risk areas should be the priority for preventative programmes although it will take several decades for benefit to accrue Despite such strategies it is likely that oncological services for penile cancer will be needed for the rest of this century
