Abstract

The phenomenon of immigration has been the catalyst of the political debate in the Europe of the twentieth and twenty first century In particular the “crime–immigration” link has been the object of a sprightly scientific discussion and several scholarly works have analyzed different aspects of the theme Most of the previous contribution is represented by publications that privileged the theoretical aspects of the subject A few of these publications however presented data and analyses in an international perspective Tonry 1997 examined racial differences in criminal offending and disparities in justice systems in a sample of European and not European countries while Marshall 1997 investigated the policeimmigrant interaction and the punishment behaviour in some European countries and in the United States These multiauthored books presented a very detailed picture of the situations regarding a few countries but did not draw a comparison between the various countries also
