Abstract

Adsorption of sulfurcontaining molecules on Pt surface has attracted much attention recently in electrocatalysis especially in oxygen reduction reaction ORR 1 2 3 4 5 6 This is because of the abundance of sulfurcontaining species in the air as a potent surface contamination source and its frequently observed strong negative effect on reactivity as steric siteblocking and/or electronic sitemodifying species 7 However it has also been observed that the adsorbed sulfurcontaining species can affect the reactivity of Pt either positively or negatively depending on the specific electrocatalytic reactions For instance enhanced activity in formic acid formaldehyde methanol and CO monolayer electrooxidation was observed on Sadsorbed Pt electrode These promotional effects of the adsorbed sulfur have been discussed in terms of the entropy effect 8 chemical state effect 9 and charge effect 10 11 In other words the underlying reasons of the effect of theThe authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support by DOE DEFG0207ER15895 The PdPt samples were courtesy of Dr TaeYeol Jeon Dr KugSeung Lee and Prof YungEun Sung from Seoul National University The authors also thank Dr DeJun Chen for fruitful discussions
