Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of patients with young and adultonset Crohn’s disease Among 79 consecutive Crohn’s disease patients 11 1392 with onset ≤16 years old youngonset Crohn’s disease was significantly associated with fever3636 vs 1471 P 0041 weight loss 727 vs 294 P 0003 isolated abdominal pain 4545 vs 1618 P 0013 lower body mass index 1732 vs 2129 kg/m2 P 0019 and extraintestinal manifestation particularly oral 455 vs 221 P 0049 and perianal lesion 636 vs 368 P 0046 In both groups ileocolonic disease and inflammatory lesion were the most prevalent site of involvement and dominant disease behavior respectively Their complication and bowel resection rate were similar but the former took a longer period of time to develop in the youngonset group 84 vs 24 month P 0018 Cox proportional hazard regression analysis revealed that active smoking and delayed use of immunosuppressive therapy were the only independent risk factors associated with increased risk of complications
