Abstract
This book gently but urgently disturbs the established “grids of intelligibility” Butler 2004b Dillon 2004 Foucault 2005 p 31 which frame the recent political legal and policy consensus that sexual violence is used as a weapon in war While the authors are careful not to undermine the hardwon recognition that sexual violence particularly rape is not simply a “sideeffect” of war caused by the “formidable force” p 17 of male soldiers’ sexuality they illuminate the paradoxical connection that exists between the sideeffect and weapon theories Baaz and Stern do not reject that sexual violence can be used as a strategic weapon but they urge a reconsideration of the way in which we have come to rather singularly comprehend rape in warfare through this narrative and the dangers of sacrificing “nuance and complexity” p 3 at the altar of straightforward comprehensibility Dauphinee 2007 Zizek 2009
