Abstract

Studies of specific tissue cell types are becoming increasingly important in advancing our understanding of cell biology and gene and protein expression Prospective isolation of specific cell types is a powerful technique as it facilitates such investigations allowing for analysis and characterization of individual cell populations Such an approach to studying inner ear tissues presents a unique challenge because of the paucity of cells of interest and limited cell markers In this chapter we describe methods for selectively labeling and isolating different inner ear cell types from the neonatal mouse cochlea using fluorescenceactivated cell sortingThe authors would like to thank R Chai for figure illustration This work was supported by grants from the Swedish Research Council C0657401 LJ NIH/NIDCD K08DC011043 RO1DC013910 Department of Defense W81XWH1410517 the Akiko Yamazaki and Jerry Yang Faculty Scholar Fund and the California Initiative in Regenerative Medicine RN306529 AGC
