Abstract
In this reflection on Donald A Landes’s recent and remarkable translation of MerleauPonty’s Phénoménologie de la perception1 I am first going to argue that certain kinds of translation which I call recreative translations are not only expressive but can yield special insights into expression in the MerleauPontian sense I call a translation recreative if it does not merely mechanically translate its source but recreates that source anew In the second part of the essay I explore recreative translation through an appreciation of Landes’s translation—which is the best translation that I have read of a philosophical text My strategy is to expose the recreative aspect of translation by describing what makes Landes’s translation excellent In the third part I use this result to unpack further insights about expression itself which is a central theme of the Phenomenologyand of MerleauPonty’s philosophy as a whole and of Landes’s own research on MerleauPonty and on other
