Abstract
Housing has long been recognized as critical to people who are seriously mentally ill1–4 In Michigan housing support emphasizes small group homes which may only provide room and food paid by the individual or additional personal care and community support ie supported care paid by the mental health system These housing options are supplemented by large group homes offering integrated medical and psychiatric careAlthough only a minority of people in the publicly funded mental health system utilizes supported housing options it can be expensive with rates at large group homes approaching 62000 per person annually Rates in small group homes at least in Michigan vary depending on the physical needs and severity of psychiatric symptoms Unfortunately the authors could not find any research reported on determining level of care within housing This lack of information is in contrast to the more extensive literature on determining level of treatment care56
