Abstract

Articles in this issue of the journal reminded me of the central and powerful role of faculty members in the academy The article by Rose and Bylander describes Dickinson’s Crossing Borders program which engages undergraduate students in a yearlong study of diversity involving four campuses and two continents To say it is lifechanging for the participants would be a cliché Gardner and colleagues examine the “habits of mind” and skills and abilities associated with doctoral study in education as perceived by graduate students and faculty members The acknowledgement of the socialization function of graduate programs underscores the power of faculty to establish a unique culture with a specific set of values skills attitudes and norms around a disciplinary base
