Abstract

China’s population had completed its demographic transition by the end of the twentieth century While this has been regarded as a major achievement and contributed to China’s recent fast economic development challenges brought about by such transition have begun to unfold in the new century Although the sheer size of China’s enormous population and its continuing momentum are still the focus of attention and ‘stabilizing low fertility’ remains a priority for the government the belowreplacement or even lower level of the fertility the accelerating ageing process and the exceptionally high sex ratio at birth have now raised increasingly more concerns Adding to the complexity of the issues China’s population now has become increasingly mobile and the size of rural–urban migration and its social and economic consequences are unprecedented New knowledge regarding the situation of China’s population after the demographic transition and the related challenges is needed not only
