Abstract

The potential for dialogue between anthropology and demography ought to be great But the mind sets and skill sets required of practitioners are very much contrasted likewise the micro and macro scales of their work Perhaps for these reasons dialogue is fitful and the specialists who have mastered both crafts are rather few Geoff Childs—who held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Australian National University 1999–2001 before his current job at Washington University St Louis—is one of them Indeed his initiation as anthropological demographer was completed at a Canberra seminar when his confession that he was for once going to talk about a place he did not know on the ground was greeted by one of the demographers present with ‘Welcome to our ranks you are now a demographer’
