Abstract

The North Frisians – who live in the German “Bundesland” federal state SchleswigHolstein – are one of the smallest national minorities in Europe constituting a minority in their ancestral land The administrative district of Nordfriesland North Frisia established in 1970 has slightly more than 160000 inhabitants It is estimated that close to one third of them consider themselves as Frisians Fewer than 10000 people speak Frisian an original Western Germanic language The Nordfriisk Instituut in Bräist/Bredstedt is a scientific institution for the Frisian language culture and history in North Frisia This article gives an overview of the institutes history structure and its variety of activities mainly in the fields of documentation language history and regional studies publications and public relations
