Abstract
Biofloc technology based 45day indoor growth trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of carbohydrate CHO molasses supplementation on two developmental stages viz juvenile J and subadult SA of Penaeus monodon in zerowater exchange system P monodon juveniles 156 ± 004 g and subadults 1432 ± 022 g were stocked in fibrereinforced plastic tanks 1000 L with soil base Carbohydrate supplementation significantly reduced p 005 the total ammonia nitrogen TAN nitriteN NO2N and nitrateN NO3N over the time periods in subadult group However no significant difference in TAN and NO2N was observed in juvenilebased treatments Supplementation of carbohydrate significantly increased p 005 the water and soil total heterotrophic bacterial THB count in both juvenile and subadults Despite increase in total Vibrio count TVC lower TVC/THB was noticed in the water column of J + CHO 082 and SA + CHO 073 compared to control groups J − CHO 148 and SA − CHO 121 Supplementation of carbohydrate increased the final body weight in J + CHO 651 ± 044 g and SA + CHO 2252 ± 098 g compared with respective controls J − CHO 505 ± 045 g and SA − CHO 2000 ± 033 g Similarly significantly lower p 005 feed conversion ratio and better protein efficiency ratio were recorded in carbohydratesupplemented juvenile and subadults treatment groups The present study demonstrates that supplementation of carbohydrate reduced the nitrogenous metabolites and significantly enhanced the growth performance of juvenile and subadult of P monodonThe authors are grateful to the Director Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture Chennai for providing the required facilities to conduct this study The constant encouragement received from Dr KP Jithendran Principal Scientist and Scientist − in − Charge AAHED Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture Chennai is gratefully acknowledged Support and help received from the laboratory staff especially Mr Mrinmay Das of Kakdwip Research Centre of CIBA are also duly acknowledged
