Abstract
Lignins in jute fibers can be activated by laccase to generate reactive oxygen species ROS free radicals for subsequent use in radical graft polymerization The effect of incubation conditions on the generation of ROS free radicals when jute powders were incubated with laccase was investigated through spintrapping technique to detect the spin adduct of Ntertbutylαphenylnitrone and ROS free radical using electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy Results revealed that the highest concentrations of ROS free radicals were generated when jute was incubated with laccase 054 U/mL and copper ions 10 mM in solution at pH 35 and a temperature of 60 °C for 1 hThis work was financially supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China 51173071 21274055 Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University NCET120883 the Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu Province BK2011157 the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities JUSRP51312B and Program for Changjiang Scholars and Innovative Research Team in University IRT1135 We thank Professor Zhao Baolu from the Institute of Biophysics Chinese Academy of Sciences for his review and proposed amendments
