Abstract
The distribution of contact pressure between a sealing element and a cylinder depending on the dimensions and mechanical characteristics of the former when subject to unidirectional compression is studied The axial load needed to ensure seal tightness is determined The relationship between this load and the dimensions of the sealing element is established It is shown that as the height of the element is decreased the axial load increases substantially The maximum height beyond which the contact pressure hardly depends on the axial load is determined
