Radiolabeled amino acids and PET show great potential for more accurate diagnostis of cerebral gliomas Jager et al 2001 Del Sole et al 2001 Langen et al 2003 Although cranial computed tomography CT and magnetic resonance imaging MRI are unsurpassed diagnostic modalities for the detection of cerebral spaceoccupying lesions the differentiation of tumor tissue from edematous necrotic and fibrotic tissue is difficult with these morphological methods Byrne 1994 Leeds et al 1994 Jansen et al 2000 which limits the efficiency of local therapy like surgery and radiotherapy Various PET studies have shown that accumulation of methyl−11 CLmethionine MET correlates with histological tumor spread Mosskin et al 1989 Ogawa et al 1993 and is better suited to define the true tumor extent of gliomas than CT or MRI A frequently asked question is whether the increased tracer accumulation of MET in brain tumors is due to a disruption of the blood–brain
