Abstract

I probably did not merit appointment as Editor of Educational Psychology Review EDPR in the fall of 1990 following Dr John A Glover’s accidental death the previous December As a relatively new associate professor I had a mere 20 publications in refereed journals and had been appointed to only one editorial board EDPR Although I was no longer in academic diapers some of my research designs had ended up on the dung heap One such study employing auditory prompts during students’ note taking was so botched up that Ken Kiewra—EDPR’s third editor—and I did not even try to prepare a manuscript Fortunately the two of us also had many successes togetherThat October 1990 Dr Glover’s other advisees and I were still mourning EDPR’s Founding Editor as we prepared to deliver a festschrift in his honor at the annual meeting of the Midwestern Educational Research Association MWERA Back then MWERA was always held at Chicago’s old Bismarck Hotel a redcarpeted antique with
