Abstract
James Franklin is a professor of mathematics at the University of New South Wales He studied mathematics and philosophy at the University of Sydney in the 1970s and acknowledges his philosophical debt to his teachers David Armstrong and David Stove who in the Sydney philosophical tradition established by John Anderson in the 1920s were staunch defenders of Science Realism and RationalityFranklin previously published The Science of Conjecture Evidence and Probability Before Pascal Johns Hopkins 2001 Corrupting the Youth A History of Philosophy in Australia Franklin 2003 and Catholic Values and Australian Realities Franklin 2006 Apart from books he has contributed to philosophy mathematics economics religious and public affairs journals If not quite a Thomist he acknowledges that his philosophical positions are informed by Aristotle and Aquinas His Catholicism and ethical realism place him in a minority strand in the otherwise mainly materialist and atheist
