Abstract
Expansive soils exhibit high volumetric deformations posing a serious threat to the stability of structures and foundations However measurement of swelling properties is time consuming and requires special and expensive equipment This study made an attempt to investigate the relationship between these parameters and easily obtained soil properties using various clay mineral mixtures to obtain soils in a wide range of plasticity indices Free swell percent was correlated to clay percent water content dry unit weight plasticity index liquidity index and cation exchange capacity using multiple regression analyses A very high R = 094 fit was also found for a proposed relationship between the percent swell and swell pressure values for samples having a swell pressure ≤300 kPa It is concluded that the proposed equations offer a rapid and inexpensive substitute for laboratory testing of swell percent/swell pressure in the preliminary stages of site investigationsLes sols gonflants présentent des potentiels de gonflement importants ce qui constitue une menace sérieuse pour la stabilité des structures et des fondations La mesure des propriétés de gonflement demande beaucoup de temps et nécessite un équipement spécial et coûteux Cet article présente une tentative pour relier ces paramètres de gonflement à des propriétés simples des sols utilisant divers mélanges argileux couvrant une large gamme d’indices de plasticité Le gonflement libre a été corrélé avec la teneur en argiles la teneur en eau le poids spécifique sec l’indice de plasticité l’indice de liquidité et la capacité d’échange de cations utilisant les techniques d’analyse par régression multiple Un coefficient de corrélation élevé R = 094 a été trouvé pour une relation proposée entre le gonflement libre et les valeurs de pressions de gonflement pour des échantillons présentant une pression de gonflement inférieure à 300 kPa L’équation proposée permet ainsi d’obtenir un substitut rapide et économique à des expériences de laboratoire plus élaborées dans les stades préliminaires de reconnaissance des terrains
