Abstract
Neglected tropical diseases NTDs represent the most common infections that mainly affect the poorest of the poor people living in tropical and subtropical countries Foodborne trematodiases FBTs constitute an important group of NTDs caused by digenetic trematodes which include the lung liver and intestinal flukes At least 56 million people are estimated to suffer globally with one or more FBTs Foodborne trematodes are endemic in several parts of the world particularly Southeast Asia including the Indian subcontinent In the context of India the tropical climate along with the traditional food practices of various native societies provide a congenial transmission environment for many of these trematodes In the present review the spectrum of FBTs reportedly occurring in the country and having a zoonotic potential is discussed in brief
