Abstract

Fish processing industries produce a large amount of byproducts every year which are just dumped or used for less productive purposes This paper instructs the approaches for the production of edible oils from Atlantic salmon byproducts for value addition of fish wastes and meeting the increased demand of omega polyunsaturated fatty acids Atlantic salmon byproducts belly part trimmed muscle frame bone and skin oils extracted by supercritical carbon dioxide SCCO2 and nhexane were compared with belly part oil PBePO obtained from traditional pressing Oil extracted by nhexane was considered as total oil and the yield was higher amongst with 4546 ± 057–4926 ± 090  followed by SCCO2 and pressed oil with 7612 ± 102–8699 ± 114 and 6183 ± 0084  of total oil dry matter basis respectively SCCO2 extracted oils showed attractive color and better viscosity property than PBePO and nhexane extracted oil The acid value peroxide value and free fatty acid value of PBePO were lowest 629 ± 032 097 ± 012 and 237 ± 019 respectively followed by SCCO2 748 ± 062–803 ± 035 110 ± 02–125 ± 014 and 323 ± 031–389 ± 040 respectively and nhexane 1028 ± 125–1103 ± 052 136 ± 028–168 ± 020 and 408 ± 022–474 ± 018 respectively extracted oils pAnisidine value and total oxidation value of SCCO2 extracted oils were significantly P  005 lower than PBePO and nhexane extracted oils SCCO2 extracted oils displayed higher radical scavenging activity and longer oxidative stability period 137 ± 003–214 ± 003 h There was no significance difference in fatty acid compositions among the extracted oils Extraction of edible oil by SCCO2 from fish byproducts may play a key role for obtaining financial benefits nutrition and reducing environmental pollutionThe authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support for the research work provided by Business for Cooperative RD Grant No C0350298 between Industry Academy and Research Institute funded Korea Small and Medium Business Administration in 2015
