Abstract
A LARGE number of patients with fatal pancreatitis develop renal failure prior to death Frey reports nitrogen retention in 87 of 129 autopsied patients with pancreatitis 43 of whom gave no history of preexisting renal disease1 Presumably pancreatitis was responsible for initiating renal failure in these 43 patients The possibility of experimental pancreatitis producing renal failure in dogs has not been studied though glomerular and tubular lesions have been reported in dogs and rats with pancreatitis Reis reported tubular changes within the kidney of dogs with fatal pancreatitis induced by trypsin but not by bile2 Glomerular and tubular changes have been reported by Falcidieno3 in the kidneys of rats dying from pancreatitis
