Abstract
Thermodynamic calculations indicate that the inherent entropy change associated with the anode reaction in the HallHéroult process leads to an electrochemically inducedcooling of the anode surface This cooling seems to be almost equal to the heat produced due to the anodic overvoltages of the HallHéroult process The results from the thermodynamic calculations are sup ported by temperature measurements in industrial anodes during operation of a cell
