Abstract
In his book Craver puts forth two main claims 1 neuroscience aims to discover the mechanistic explanations of phenomena 2 fields of research in neuroscience are unified not through a reduction of higher level fields to some fundamental field but through their contribution to the discovery of the mechanisms that produce the phenomena under investigation To drive his arguments home Craver examines the development of the explanations of longterm potentiation LTP and spatial memoryNeuroscience has notable differences from sciences such as physics and chemistry An important difference concerns the nature of laws in these two domains In physics laws are universal regularities In neuroscience the generalizations are limited in scope stochastic mechanistically fragile and historically contingent ‘Mechanistically fragile’ means that generalizations hold contingently on the initial conditions and the integrity of the underlying mechanism ‘Historically contingent’ means
