Abstract
The study of the relationship between science and Christianity has often been distorted by two factors One has been to treat Christianity as a welldefined theological system with only minor variations between its various forms at least as far as interaction with science is concerned The other has been a tendency to interpret the history of this relationship in terms of either the “conflict” thesis—with its assumption that they are incompatible—or of an apologetic stance that assumes that their harmony with one another can be demonstrated As Efthymios Nicolaidis notes in his introduction to this excellent book neither of these assumptions is adequate and in particular there has been little or no recognition in much of the current literature of the complexity or even existence of this relationship in those areas in which Eastern Orthodox Christianity has been the predominant religious faith
