Abstract
John Burgess’ Rigor and Structure is an enjoyable read Given the weight of its topics it is almost breezy It is replete with everything from gossip about the culture of mathematics to nice discussions about its history sociology and philosophy all the while addressing some of the philosophical questions about mathematics that most matter to mathematicians and should play a more dominant role in philosophical discourseGetting so much in one book constrained to two topics—mathematical rigor and mathematical structure—however comes with drawbacks Foremost is the problem of who its audience could be Because of the brevity and subject matter mathematicians without at least some philosophical background and philosophers without at least a little advanced mathematics especially category theory will both struggle to understand the book Conversely philosophers with a mathematical background and mathematicians with some philosophy under their belts may not find much in the book
