Abstract

The provision by UK universities often but not always in association with other educational bodies such as the Workers Educational Association WEA and local education authorities of nonaccredited nonvocational education to any adult who wished to enrol without prior entry qualifications was arguably the most important educational programme of the whole of the twentieth century – the most important in terms of its social impact and equally its political impact The number of politicians and holders of major offices of state who participated in that programme as this book points out was very large and two leaders of the Labour party who however never made it to the position of prime minister Hugh Gaitskill and Neil Kinnock both spent several years organising and teaching in that programme It also had significant impact internationally being exported to Africa and parts of Asia a development not dealt with here The movement needs its historian for although a good deal
