Abstract
This 4week randomised doubleblind study compared the efficacy and short term tolerability of simvastatin epistatin at daily doses of 25 5 10 and 20mg with placebo in 160 elderly patients with hypercholesterolaemia and clinically significant atherosclerosis All doses were significantly more effective than placebo Reductions in total cholesterol after 4 weeks of therapy were 34 167 193 228 and 284 for placebo and the 25mg 5mg 10mg and 20mg doses respectively Simvastatin was well tolerated one patient who was receiving 25 mg/day suffered a myocardial infarction which was not considered to be drug related after 8 days of therapy No other serious clinical or laboratory adverse effect was seen Studies indicate that simvastatin is an effective hypolipidaemic drug in older patients and it was well tolerated in this short term study
