Abstract
Nielsen and Einarsen have raised a critique in their manuscript entitled Can observations of workplace bullying really make you depressed A response to Emdad et al 2013 to our published paper entitled The impact of bystanding to workplace bullying on symptoms of depression among women and men in industry in Sweden an empirical and theoretical longitudinal studyNielsen and Einarsen suggest that the relationship between being a bystander to bullying and distress can be fully explained by the observer’s own exposure to bullying They show some empirical results from their study that question our conclusion that observed bullying in itself is related to subsequent distress in our study it is depressive symptoms We regret that individuals exposed to bullying at baseline were not omitted in our analyses When these individuals were excluded and using the same unadjusted
