Abstract
With the development of a seat belt airbag for the vehicle rear Daimler is opening up a new chapter in vehicle safety The specially designed seat belt which has a strap that can be inflated with gas can significantly reduce the risk of rib injuriesThe past few years have seen a steady further improvement in the safety standards of new vehicles However the majority of vehicle manufacturers as well as lawmakers and consumer institutes in the field of passive safety have been focusing their attention mainly on the protection of the driver and front passenger and less on the passengers in the rearAlthough today’s vehicles provide the rearseat passenger with a safety system in the form of a seat belt some of which are also equipped with a pyrotechnical tensioner or belt force limiter approaches towards developing an additional protection system such as a rear airbag have so far proved unsuccessful
