Abstract

During its development a new Opel model spends an average of 1000 h in the wind tunnel In addition to its own climatic wind tunnel in Rüsselsheim Opel also uses facilities at FKFS in Stuttgart Since the recent reconstruction some of them are known as the most advanced of their kindAutomotive development is currently focused on two main areas One is incar connectivity optimising the interaction of occupants with the car via their smartphones It is a key aspect for the future operation of many vehicle functions all the way to autonomous driving The other focus of development is the need to cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in view of increasingly tough legal regulations which require manufacturers to further reduce the average fuel consumption and CO2figures for their car fleets There are plenty of avenues for achieving this such as the further optimisation of combustion engines weight savings to be gained from lightweight construction
