Abstract
A modified version of the KermanKlein method for the description of nuclear rotations is given in terms of generalized density matrices It is shown that the system of basic equations is free from inconsistencies inherent in the original formulation ofKerman andKlein and that it is completely equivalent to the cranking equations To obtain this result from the exact equations of quantum mechanics we have in this paper to confine ourselves to the plane rotator model and to factorize the generalized twoparticle density matrix in a special new way We stress however that neither anI2 spectrum nor a cranking mechanism has been imposed
